Eternal Seed Stage (Sanatan Binduavastha)

 

  • Meaning: Represents the origin, the timeless and infinite seed of existence.
  • Defining Characteristics: The unmanifest stage where the divine energy exists in its purest, formless state.
Pre-Vedic Period~ 7000 BCE - 3000 BCE

Cosmic Creation Stage (Srishti Kalpaavastha)

 

  • Meaning: The stage of creation when the universe and life forms began.
  • Defining Characteristics: The emergence of Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver), and Mahesh (the Destroyer). The Vedas are revealed.
The Vedic Period~3000 BCE - 1500 BCE

Spiritual Foundation Stage (Vedic Yugavastha)

 

  • Meaning: Establishing the foundation of Sanatan Dharma through the Vedas, Upanishads, and Yajnas.
  • Defining Characteristics: Rituals, hymns, and early spiritual practices were formalized. Varna (social structure) was established.
The Vedic Period~1500 BCE - 500 BCE

Knowledge and Expansion Stage (Jnanodayavastha)

 

  • Meaning: Expansion of Sanatan Dharma into philosophical and spiritual realms.
  • Defining Characteristics: Emergence of texts like the Upanishads, Mahabharata, and Ramayana. Dharma (duty), Artha (prosperity), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation) were defined.
The Vedic Period(~500 BCE - 200 CE)

Devotional Awakening Stage (Bhakti Kalpaavastha)

 

  • Meaning: Rise of Bhakti (devotion) as a core principle of Sanatan Dharma.
  • Defining Characteristics: Devotional movements, idol worship, and the practice of temples became central. Saints and poets spread the essence of devotion.
The Vedic Period(~200 CE - 800 CE)

Transformation Stage (Parivartanavastha)

 

  • Meaning: Period of challenges, adaptation, and resilience.
  • Defining Characteristics: The arrival of external influences and reforms. Saints like Adi Shankaracharya unified and revived Sanatan Dharma's core tenets.
The Vedic Period(~800 CE - 1700 CE)

Modern Revival Stage (Nutan Jagaranavastha)

 

  • Challenges and Adaptation:
    With the advent of Islamic and British rule, Sanatan Dharma faced cultural and religious challenges but adapted through reform movements.
  • Key Reformers:
    • Raja Ram Mohan Roy: Advocated against social evils like Sati.
    • Swami Vivekananda: Revived Sanatan Dharma globally, presenting its teachings at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
    • Mahatma Gandhi: Practiced non-violence (Ahimsa), inspired by Sanatan principles.
